Types of Pitch in Cricket | Cricketcriteria

Different types of pitch in Cricket

There are many types of the Cricket Pitches and each of them has its own attributes which make it either batsmen or bowling friendly. Pitch does play a vital role as far as the overall result of the game is concerned and that is why you will see a pitch report at the start of every game. The nature of pitch can determine things like the amount of runs that can be scored in the match, the decision of the captain winning the toss, the length of the match in case of a test game and so on. This is why the pitch is the most important part of a cricketing field and to understand the game properly one has to learn about different types of pitches.

A cricket ground is generally huge, but the result of a match is decided within a 22-yard pitch. This 22-yard rectangular area of 10 feet width becomes a battlefield for two teams playing against each other.
When we think of a cricket match the first thing that strikes our mind is “HOW THE PITCH WOULD BE FOR TODAY’S MATCH?” and this exhibits the importance of pitch in the game of cricket. A bowler-friendly pitch can force the batsmen to return to the pavilion in each delivery whereas a batting pitch can stop a bowler from continuing his spell.  A pitch when starts behaving equally for both batsman and bowler, it is considered a good pitch and this type of pitches make the match quite interesting.

Cricket Pitches are mainly categorized into 3 types:

  • Dead pitch
  • Dusty pitch
  • Green pitch

#1 Dead pitch

These pitches are completely flat with no grass and no moisture. The grasses on this pitch are rolled down and each drop the moisture is taken away. These dark-colored pitches are heaven for batsmen as it has no help for bowlers. Most of the Dead pitches are mainly found in Indian subcontinents. ODI and T20 matches are mainly played in this type of pitches. As these wickets have nothing for bowlers the batsmen continue to put runs on the scoreboard leaving the bowlers in a state of trouble. But the game played in these wickets are very much interesting because of the huge maximums from the batsmen.

These are real nightmare for the bowlers.

#2 Dusty pitch

The surface of the dusty pitch is soft and unrolled which creates a great help for the spin bowlers. These pitches are easier to bat as compared to other two because in this wicket the bounce of the ball can be predicted by the batsmen. Dusty pitches are mostly found in subcontinents. These wickets are not that difficult to score as the deliveries normally stay low which can be easily faced by the batsmen. But spinners with great skills can pick up a bunch of wickets in these pitches.

#3 Green Pitch

These are graveyards for the batsmen and fast bowlers absolutely love to bowl on these surfaces. These wickets have a thin layer of grass on the good length area which causes the ball to seam and move after pitching. These wickets are nightmare for the batsmen because it is almost impossible to judge the magnitude of the movement that ball gets after pitching. Matches at these tracks are usually low scoring and you will see lots of wickets falling down in these matches. Even if these pitches seem to help the seam bowlers but serve absolutely nothing for a spinner. These types of pitches are found in western countries of the globe and mainly preferred for TEST CRICKET.
